Mars entered the sign of Pisces at 5:54p PST yesterday, ushering in what on the surface would seem to be a period of actions taken in the name of selfless service.

Mars is about action and taking initiative.  It can be very masculine and assertive , sometimes even aggressive or combative…which are fascinating characteristics when they are combined with Pisces energy.

Pisces is the sign of unconditional love and acceptance.  It is a water sign, and is extremely emotionally and energetically sensitive.  In fact, it can be sensitive to the point where it takes on others’ emotions as its own, which makes it a common chart influence of those who are very empathetic and compassionate.

Therefore, the placement of Mars in Pisces enables us to take the initiative more than we usually would in being of selfless service to others.  It may even be inclined to fight for the care and well-being of others.

Pisces is also associated with philanthropy and spirituality, so organizations that serve with those intentions may tend to draw your attention more so now than usual.  You may also find yourself simply wanting to be more active in charitable or philanthropic pursuits or causes, to the point where you may even take action to develop and nurture your own philanthropic cause.  Actions taken now are less about you, and more about others or what you need to support and serve others…in most cases.

However, Pisces can also be very subservient or passive, and is known for being so selfless it often forgets to serve or care for itself.  That said, when Pisces feels it has neglected itself too long or feels that others aren’t giving it what it needs to continue its selfless work, it can take on the role of victim very easily.  This is where the Mars in Pisces combination gets interesting.

Victim + selfless service often equals a martyrdom complex, and Pisces can master that art of selflessness to the point of self-victimization.  Due to their extremely empathetic compassion, Pisces often gives so much to others they can give to the point where they have none left to care for themselves.  Often, this is because Pisces feels like it is selfish to do or have for themselves.  Concerned about their connection to All-That-Is and not wanting to take “more than they deserve”, they don’t want others to think they don’t care about everyone and/or everything around them.

But when Pisces does realize that they really do need help or resource, they don’t want others to know just how needy they are because then others may not come to them to be served…and Pisces lives to serve others.  So in order to get what they need to cover up their own neediness, Pisces can be the masters of passive-aggressive behavior.  They can pretend they don’t need what they need, but at the same time subtly push (usually through suggestion) for what they need without directly asking for it.  This is where selfless actually becomes selfish…and this is where the combination of Pisces and Mars could become really noteworthy.

With Mars having a naturally aggressive energy about it, and with Pisces not wanting to be outwardly aggressive, this combination could find yourself being more assertive or aggressive when it comes to getting what you need in order to be of service to others in a truly selfless way.  Mars in Pisces brings you more initiative than Pisces alone would normally bring to acquire the resources that allow you to take care of yourself and be of service to others.  You may find yourself even fighting for what you need or want

This combination of energies could prove to serve you and all of us very well in the next few weeks as Mars in Pisces encourages all of us to put ourselves first, making sure we have what we need to care for ourselves in order to be present to the Highest level of service we can provide to others.

But for those of who are conditioned to or more comfortable in the victim or martyr role, this Mars in Pisces period could prove to be your undoing and bring forth a good deal of challenge.  If you are finding this period challenging in regard to getting things started or taking actions in your life in service to others, ask yourself the following questions:

  • How do you want to serve others?  How do you envision yourself being of service?
  • How does serving others in the way you envision serve YOU?
  • What does being of service to others hide about you?  Is your being charitable or philanthropic your way of making up for something you don’t like about yourself, hiding a lack of self-love or self-worth, or is it in response to something someone once accused you of being or told you that you should be?
  • What do YOU need right now to feel provided for or taken care of?
  • What resource(s), attention, affection, or assistance would help you feel strong and confident in being of service to others?  What ideal(s) do you need to have met for you to feel taken care of?
  • How would you serve others differently if you had those resources?

These questions may help you get to the root of the challenges you may face during this Mars in Pisces time, which will be with us now through March 11, 2013 – about 5 weeks.  Even if you aren’t experiencing challenges, the answers may be very insightful for you regarding your call to selfless service to others.

The bottom line:  none of us ever do anything that is not in our own best self-interest.  The question becomes…is that “best self-interest” about your individual self or about your collective self as part of All-That –Is?

Mastery of this Mars in Pisces energy comes when you are serving both others and yourself well when taking actions to be of service.  When acting in service is intended (and successful in fulfilling its intent) to make things better for everyone and everything involved, the world becomes a better place for all through our collective interconnection.
