As of 8:37a PDT on Friday, August 16th, 2013, Venus entered Libra.

Libra is an air sign, representing fairness, balance, equality, and justice.  It also represents detachment and objective assessment of both (or all) sides of an issue in order to help establish a peaceful balance in matters that is fair and just to both/all parties involved.

Venus is the ruling planet of Libra, traditionally representing beauty, prosperity, fertility, and persuasive female charm.  I would beg to differ about the “persuasive female charm” part, and define it simply as a feminine expression of masculine energy as Libra (and therefore, Venus) has no reason to persuade.

Let us remember that Venus rules Libra, which is an air signVenus goes about her way with mental and intellectual logic and detachment.  There’s no emotional or sexual drama here!  This is point upon which many people’s ideas about Venus and Libra get turned on their heads.  Venus actually goes about its beautifying, peace-making and “feminine charm” with remarkable objectivity and little to no emotion, giving it a reality far from the emotional, romantic, and feminine image that Venus is often associated with.  In fact, these qualities actually make Venus very much like most of us would archetypically perceive most men to be in relationships – intellectual, objective, detached, logical.  This is why I often think of Venus as, in Jungian terms, “the female animus”.

There are also some people who assume that because Venus is traditionally associated with feminine qualities, emotions must be involved, or that the qualities that Libra and Venus embody make them lesser or meeker than Aries and Mars, their opposing masculine counterparts.  It would serve those people well to remember – Libra is about equality, balance, and partnership.  Therefore, Libra is an equal yet opposite partner to Aries; Venus is an equal yet opposite partner to Mars.  Libra and Venus are just as powerful as Aries and Mars in their own way.  They must be in order to truly provide balance to Mars and Aries.  And that “feminine charm” usually associated with Venus – it’s actually just a matter of the aesthetic and/or experiential beauty and prosperity that Venus brings forth coming through a reasonable approach to bringing balance and peace to one-on-one relationships of all kinds.

Venus in Libra, to be most effective in its role, encourages you to be very objective and clear about the partnership matters you may have at hand.  When assessing the one-on-one relationships in your life, Venus in Libra gives you the ability to look at them not with emotion, but rather a noticeable absence of emotion.  You get to see these partnerships from an intellectual point of view, with objectivity and logic rather than with emotions and your heart.  This isn’t to say that your heart has no say.  It is to say that Venus in Libra gives you a welcome opportunity to assess the real value of your relationships with others.

  • Do your one-on-one connections/partners bring prosperity into your life, or do they drain your resources for no good reason?
  • Do they beauty into your life, or do they bring ugliness and/or ‘a dark cloud’ into your life with their presence?
  • Do they bring healthy and productive balance into your life, or do they take you of or out of healthy and productive balance?
  • Do they bring peace and ease into your life, or do they bring chaos and arguments into your life?

These are questions that arise and that you get to answer for yourself as the power of Venus is exponentially strengthened as it travels through its native sign of Libra now through September 11th.

Also consider how others may answer the above questions about you.  Are you yourself bringing prosperity, beauty, balance, peace and ease into the lives of others?  There are two sides to every relationship.  It’s important to note that each party involved carries equal responsibility for the state of their union.

Keep in mind – this isn’t to say that your relationships should be completely peaceful and easy.  There is no healthy relationship that is all smiles and sunshine.  The tension and conflict of Aries and Mars is necessary for you to grow and expand in your individual life journey even when you are in partnership.  Yet you may need a different level of tension or conflict in your relationships than someone else.  Are your tension/conflict needs in balance, or do you need more or less than your partner?  This is something that you have an opportunity to figure out during Venus in Libra – what truly balances you, who & what brings beauty and prosperity into your life (and how), and ultimately, who are your equals and opposites, and therefore your true partners in your life.
